I’m a cleaning pro – Bleach doesn’t actually last forever, here’s the expiration date

Cleaning pro Cathryn who runs YouTube account Amateur Decorating has revealed the average lifespan of most cleaning products.

“Bleach, as a good rule of thumb has a shelf life of six months.

“And after six months it’s basically just starting to break down and lose its toxidity so don’t worry, if you are going to use old bleach it’s just not as strong as it would have been when you use it within a six-month time period.

The amount of time a cleaning product can stay fresh depends on its ingredients.

Bleach, for example, contains a number of ingredients including sodium hypochlorite, which is mixed with salt, washing soda, and lye.

Once exposed to air, the chlorine gas starts to evaporate and eventually turns into salt and sodium chlorate.

Bear in mind that bleach normally loses about 10 per cent of its effectiveness within six months after opening.

That doesn’t mean you cannot use it, just that it will be less effective.

However, an unopened bottle of bleach can last up to a year.
